Stitching a Future

How Kaliiti Disabled Women’s Network is Empowering Through Sewing

Amidst the hum of sewing machines and quiet determination, a powerful story of empowerment is unfolding in Uganda. At the center of this story is the Kaliiti Disabled Women’s Network, a grassroots movement that is helping women with disabilities stitch their way to independence.

What began as a support group has evolved into a vibrant network focused on vocational training and income generation. One of the most transformative tools in their journey? The manual sewing machine.

Under the shade of a community building, rows of women—many in wheelchairs, some with visual impairments or albinism—sit at sewing tables, turning fabric into opportunity. For many of them, this is their first experience earning a living on their own terms.

These sewing machines, donated through international partnerships—most notably with Turkish development organizations—are more than just hardware. They represent freedom, dignity, and the belief that disability is not inability.

With training sessions held regularly, the Kaliiti team teaches both the basics and advanced skills of tailoring. Participants learn to sew garments, school uniforms, household items, and even create bespoke designs for sale at local markets.

Beyond skills, this initiative fosters confidence and community. Women who were once isolated due to stigma or mobility barriers now come together, support one another, and build networks of trust.

Their products don’t just generate income—they tell stories. Every hem and stitch speaks of resilience, courage, and the refusal to be defined by circumstance.

As one member put it,

“When I sew, I feel strong. I’m not waiting for help—I’m working for myself.”

The Kaliiti sewing machine initiative is proof that when people are given the right tools and the chance to thrive, they rise—not alone, but together.
